Panic And Anxiety Disorders Are Increasingly Common Mental Illnesses

Mental illnesses such as panic and anxiety disorders affect millions around the world. The most common of these include, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Post traumatic Stress Disorder. Such disorders can be extremely disabling and difficult to live with.

People who suffer from these disorders may suffer from panic and anxiety attacks frequently which can disrupt normal day life. Panic disorder sufferers experience frequent panic attacks which can be extremely terrifying.

Symptoms are varied and can depend on the severity of the attack. Commonly, symptoms include, tension, fear, apprehension, palpitations and uncontrollable obsessive thoughts. Sufferers may also feel unreal and detached from their surroundings.

It's hard to understand what a sufferer experiences but for them it's all too real and terrifying. Surroundings may appear strange and distorted. Odd perceptual distortions or dreamlike sensations may be experienced.

A panic attack can start regardless of state including sleep. Panic attacks are different to anxiety attacks in that they can happen at any time. As attacks can be spontaneous, sufferers may feel scared to do everyday things. Day to day chores such as going out to the supermarket can seem impossible for a sufferer.

Another reason a panic disorder sufferer may avoid a certain place or situation is because of a previous bad experience. Perhaps they experienced a panic attack at the local convenience store one time before. The thought and anticipation of going back may trigger panic and anxiety symptoms.

Stepping back into the same convenience store or another like it is likely to cause a panic attack. Life can be difficult to cope with when in constant fear of an impending attack.

Although anxiety and panic attacks are often considered the same, there are differences. Anxiety symptoms are often triggered by day to day stressors. This in turn creates a fight or flight response producing disabling symptoms.

All panic and anxiety disorders are treatable. Although medication is available, it is not always necessary because there are natural therapies that work. Behavioral therapy for example, has been used successfully by many sufferers.
